Air travel, especially for long distances, can increase the risk of venous thromboembolism. The risk of deep vein thrombosis, mainly related to the prolonged immobility of the lower limbs, is however limited. Nevertheless, fear of venous thromboembolism during air travel may lead to improper practices, such as inappropriate self-administration of anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Furthermore, it is forgotten how simple and correct behaviours, such as regular mobilization and adequate hydration, can reduce the risk of venous thromboembolism and allow to travel safely.
